Paris Photo 2016: Matthew Brandt, Ellen Carey and Matthew Porter

M+B is pleased to announce its participation at Paris Photo 2016 from November 10 - 13 at the Grand Palais in Paris. Please come visit us at Stand C27 where we will be presenting works by Matthew Brandt, Ellen Carey and Matthew Porter.

Matthew Brandt (b. 1982, Los Angeles, CA) received his BFA from Cooper Union and MFA from UCLA. Brandt has been the subject of recent institutional solo shows at the Columbus Museum of Art; Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art and SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah. Recent group exhibitions include The Magic Medium at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Light, Paper, Process: Reinventing Photography at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; Second Chances at the Aspen Art Museum; What is a Photograph? at the International Center of Photography, New York; Land Marks at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Material Matters: Water, Pigment, and Light at Van Every Gallery, Davidson College, NC and Touch the Sky: Art and Astronomy curated by Mary-Kay Lombino at Vassar College, New York. Brandt’s work is in the current exhibition A Matter of Memory: Photography as Object in the Digital Age at the George Eastman Museum, Rochester, New York and will be part of The Poetics of Place: Contemporary Photographs from the Met Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The artist’s work can be found in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Armand Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and Brooklyn Museum of Art, among others. In 2015, Brandt was shortlisted for the prestigious Prix Pictet award and had his work showcased in an exhibition at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Matthew Brandt lives and works in Los Angeles.

Ellen Carey (b. 1952, New York, NY) received her BFA from Kansas City Art Institute and MFA from The State University of New York at Buffalo. Her work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at such institutions as the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, CT and International Center of Photography, New York, among others. A suite of Carey’s Self-Portraits was recently acquired by the Centre Georges Pompidou and included in their recent exhibition The Unbearable Lightness – The 1980s: Photography, Film. Her work is presently on view in A Matter of Memory: Photography as Object in the Digital Age at the George Eastman Museum, Rochester, NY. Upcoming group shows include The Polaroid Project which will travel to the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth, TX; MIT Museum, Cambridge, MA and WestLicht Museum for Photography in Vienna. Recent group shows include The Edge of Vision: The Rise of Abstraction in Photography at the Aperture Foundation, New York; Part Picture at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto and The Persistence of Geometry at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Carey’s work can be found in the permanent collections of The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C. and The Cleveland Museum of Art, among others. Ellen Carey lives and works in Hartford, CT, where she teaches at the University of Hartford.

Matthew Porter (b. 1980, Boston, MA) received his BA from Bard College and MFA from the Yale School of Art. Recent solo exhibitions include Hand, Select & Invert Layer at Bolte Lang, Zurich; Fruits et Riche Vaisselle Sur Une Table 1640-2015 at One Star Press in Paris; Shadows, Patterns, Pears at Foam Museum, Amsterdam; Screen Selections and Still Lifes, Wallspace, New York and Leo Koenig Projekte, New York. The artist will have his second exhibition at M+B in April 2017. His work has been exhibited in the group shows New Photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York; Reality Check at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston; Greater New York at MoMAPS1, New York and Secondhand at Pier 24, San Francisco. Notable press includes Frieze, The New York Times, ARTFORUM, Modern Painters and The New Yorker. Gordon has been a critic in photography at the Yale School of Art. He is the winner of the 2014 Foam Paul Huf award and exhibited his work in a solo exhibition at the museum in 2014. Gordon’s work can be found in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, among others. A monograph, Still Lifes, Portraits & Parts was published by Mörel Books in 2013. Gordon lives and works in Brooklyn.
