His old name was Bruce Davenport, Jr. Lafitte comes from a line who were slaves who were owned by a man named Davenport. As a child, Bruce's grandfather would tell him stories, and Bruce would draw the scenes, so these drawings refer back to both his childhood and ancestry. The drawing is of the Davenport slave plantation drawn from these stories. He changed his name a few years back to Dapper Bruce Lafitte to rid himself of the continuation of the name that enslaved his family. Lafitte is the name of the housing project he grew up in.
