M+B is pleased to announce our participation at NADA Miami 2018 from December 6 - 9, 2018 at the Ice Palace Studios. Please come visit us at Booth 9.08 where we will be presenting new sculptures by Los Angeles-based artist Nevine Mahmoud.
NADA Miami marks the debut of new figurative glass works by Mahmoud, along with new stone objects that continue the artist's exploration of materiality, desire and form.
Mahmoud's objects are driven by material processes, where a property of the material is exposed or undone through developing the work. Her glass busts and breasts, while erotically charged, also are distinctly shaped to exaggerate the medium's inherent hollowness and to emphasize the idea of space filling void. These truncated body parts function like phantom limbs, highlighting absence as much as they draw the viewer in to real forms.
In stone, Mahmoud works with the contrasting strength and fragility of the material. Each sculpture is born from direct relationships with each piece of stone-what is an otherwise familiar everyday shape, a ball or wedge, becomes a seductively uncanny one through its conversation with the artist's body and the viewer's own body.
Nevine Mahmoud (b. 1988, London) received her BA from Goldsmiths, University of London and MFA from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Her work is currently on view in The Artist is Present, curated by Maurizio Cattelan, at the Yuz Museum in Shanghai. Recent group exhibitions include Dreamers Awake: Women Artists After Surrealism at White Cube, London; The Poet, the Critic and the Missing at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; MADEMOISELLE at the Centre Régional D'art Contemporain Occitanie in Sète; This is Presence at Ballroom Marfa; and The Lasting Concept at the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art. Other thematic exhibitions include I Had the Landscape in My Arms at Josh Lilley, London; An Uncanny Order at Jessica Silverman, San Francisco; Debris at James Fuentes, New York; and Seven Reeds at Overduin & Co., Los Angeles. f o r e p l a y (2017) at M+B was theartist's debut solo exhibition and was selected as an Artforum Critics' Pick. Other notable press includes MOUSSE, Art Review, New York Magazine, Los Angeles Times, and Contemporary Art Daily. Nevine Mahmoud lives and works in Los Angeles.
