M+B is pleased to announce our participation at Art Athina 2022 in Athens, Greece. The fair opens September 16 and runs through September 19, 2022. Please join us in Booth C1 as we present new works by artists Alex Gibson and Monsieur Zohore.
Alex Gibson uses the immediacy of chalk pastel to render cartoons in the language of traditional drawing. By blending appropriated imagery and more personal technique he blurs and complicates ownership and position, creating a tension where figures and scenes are illustrated and devalued, simultaneously highlighted and made immaterial. The fragmented comic logic, images occurring together and separately and adjacently and independently, creates narratives while rejecting stories; the images unfold and collapse, the subject is always just off the canvas, a mystery for the viewer.
Alex Gibson (b. 1991, Northampton, MA) received an MFA from Yale School of Art, New Haven in 2019 and a BFA from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York in 2013. His work was most recently on view in Primordial at Palo Gallery, New York (2021). The artist will have his first solo exhibition with M+B in October 2022. Alex Gibson lives and works in New York.
Monsieur Zohore’s practice is invested in the consumption and digestion of culture through the conflation of domestic quotidian labor and art production. He explores queer history and his Ivorian-American heritage through performance, installation, and sculpture, approaching each with a lens of humor, economics, art history, and labor.
Monsieur Zohore (b. 1993, Potomac, MD) received an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2020 and a BFA from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York in 2015 and has been the subject of solo and two-person exhibitions at De Boer Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Springsteen Gallery, Baltimore, MD and Jack Barrett Gallery, New York, NY. Group exhibitions include Sculpture Center, Long Island City, NY; The Baker Museum, Naples, FL and Socrates Sculpture Park, New York, NY. He has performed at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD; Canada Gallery, New York, NY; and the Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, OH. Monsieur Zohore's work is included in the collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN. The artist has a forthcoming solo exhibition with M+B. Monsieur Zohore lives and works in Richmond, VA and New York, NY.
