M+B is pleased to present Pilgrimage to the Sun, an online group exhibition featuring photographs by Andrew Bush, Norm Clasen, LeRoy Grannis, Hugh Holland, Whitney Hubbs, Mike Miller, Bob Mizer, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Matthew Porter, Malick Sidibé, Sanlé Sory, Joseph Szabo, Massimo Vitali and Hannah Whitaker. The exhibition will open for virtual viewing on August 5th, with selected works on view at our Los Angeles location through August 31, 2023.
Pilgrimage to the Sun unveils a symphony of sunlight and pleasure in celebration of this summer season. The exhibition’s photographs, each the result of a sudden flood of light before the lens, collectively embody the essence of a moment drenched in the sun.
From their respective corners of the world, the selected photographers capture the eternal moment of summer through iconic imagery and feeling. Each depicted figure can be seen challenging the fated Icarus archetype: the brazen boy who chased the sun. Each image captures a fleeting moment liberated from tomorrow’s anxieties, where desires roam freely: from the liquid youth presented in LeRoy Grannis’ iconic documentation of 60s California surfers; Hugh Holland’s photographs capturing the golden era of 70s skate culture; Malick Sidibé’s joyful chronicle of Mali’s youth revolution in the 60s; and Andrew Bush’s depiction of the self-realized Hollywood star, Angelyne. Presenting myriad cultures, times, and places, Pilgrimage to the Sun captures the complete spectrum of light, from the pervasive warmth of freedom to the limelight of fame and fortune.
Pilgrimage to the Sun disregards our inevitable transition of a moment into a memory, instead rejoicing in the unmistakable sensation of light pressed against the skin. Transcending the bounds of nostalgia, the exhibition becomes a prism through which we can celebrate the indomitable spirit of summer–– a season fleeting in its passage, yet immortal in its return.
